Rena Wertman

Rena does not usually share her story publicly, and we are grateful that she made an exception for us. Rena’s story is one of strength and continuous giving.

Rena made aliyah to Israel and worked at the Derech Avot School for many years. Throughout her time there, Rena was known for her desire to help and give to every person who came her way.

Rena has been living with a muscle disease for the past 50 years. Due to the deterioration of her condition she has been in a wheelchair for 20 years.

Just a brief interaction with Rena is enough to understand her immense willpower and how giving she is. So it was not surprising that after her retirement she found a place where she could continue to give and volunteer. When the Senior’s Club opened in Efrat, Rena saw her opportunity to contribute to people in need. In addition to preparing food, washing dishes, and giving lessons, Rena worked to build the Bridge Club. The game of bridge encourages thinking and social interactions, and offers many benefits to the elderly population.

Rena admits that she derives a great sense of satisfaction from her ability to volunteer. But we know that we are the ones who are privileged to learn from her kindness every day.
